In 2023 the Harrisburg Redevelopment Authority requested community input on areas in need of sidewalk improvement and followed that with an assessment of all sidewalks within the boundaries of the reinvestment zone (completed in 2024). Unsurprisingly, the result was a substantial need for improvements. To begin to address those needs, the Harrisburg Redevelopment Authority has pledged to spend $5 million in tax increment over the next five years to make sidewalk improvements and to potentially do even more through requests for grant funds. Design is currently underway to repair deteriorated sections of sidewalk, fill gaps where sidewalks are missing and make other improvements in several targeted areas.
Current areas within the zone under design for improvements:
Project 1: Avenue I Area Improvements includes sidewalks along N. Burr, N. Stiles, N. Bryan, Avenue J, Avenue I and Baywood in proximity to Burnet Elementary
Project 2: Polk and Canal Street Improvements includes sidewalks on Canal Street from Milby to 75th Street and Polk Street from Wyatt to Wayside Drive, including intersections with UP Railroad
Project 3: 72nd Street Area Improvements includes sidewalks along portions of 72nd, 73rd, 74th, 75th and Texas Streets
Additionally, grant funds have been requested for improvements to sidewalks along neighborhood streets from Stiles to Greenwood between Navigation and Harrisburg.
Stay tuned for updates!
